Farm Progress editors and staff cover a lot of territory in the U.S. Often, they capture moments on farms while interviewing for stories. But now and then, the opportunity for an image presents itself, the photo is taken, but there's no major story to be shared. Moments like a dragonfly landing on a weed in just the right light, a dog driving a truck, a highland steer eating grass along the river and so much more.

College athletics at Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture in Curtis, Neb. are a little different. They include rodeo, crops judging and one of the top stock dog teams in the nation. During a recent visit to campus, this fellow posed in the truck for us, while students and college instructors were loading cattle headed to spring pasture.

Editor Jennifer Kiel took this photo some time ago – 2014 to be exact – at the 70th anniversary of the West Branch Feeder Calf sale. Even though Jennifer really liked this photo, it did not make it into the print edition of Michigan Farmer. The unknown woman was gathering cattle to go into the sale barn. The West Branch Feeder Calf sale is known for its exceptional preconditioned calves.

Indiana Prairie Farmer editor Tom Bechman's parent's retirement home used to sit where the trees are planted on the mound of landscaping dirt on the right side of the picture. There is an Amazon warehouse and other warehouses behind the mound. Three miles away, a retention pond for a subdivision sits where the farmhouse he grew up in once stood. His parents didn’t sell any of it for development. They were tenant farmers, and the house was swallowed up by a government economic development district after they sold to someone else. A recent report by American Farmland Trust outline show various states stack up on protecting farmland. Google it and see where your state ranks. Indiana is 44th out of 50!

Minnesota has state and federal lands that are available for public grazing. This Highland steer greeted kayakers last fall who were paddling south of Halfmoon Landing on the Mississippi River backwaters between Wabasha and Weaver, south of Kellogg. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has land along the river.
